Daufuskie Island Historic District
Visiting the Historic District of the island can be best described as a visit to yesterday. Vestiges of our heritage are still in evidence and much is being done to protect what remains. For example, the Community Preservation Plan, which took 5 years to complete, has been endorsed. This will permit density to be transferred to hamlets that will be constructed at the entry portals along the waterway. Thus, selected interior areas will remain undeveloped, pristine and untouched.
Also, the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has identified emerging visitor trends that support the development of a comprehensive framework for tourism growth. Daufuskie Island will be featured prominently in their report. This is essential if visitors to the Lowcountry are to discover the magic of the island.
Add to all this the wonder of spending time with practicing artists and artisans on Daufuskie. Here you share not only their art, but also their inspiration. Writers from Somerset Maugham to Pat Conroy have found here everything from characters, to the peace in which to write about them. Painters discover subjects and sculptors have uncovered timeless shapes from pottery of the past.
Come visit us and you'll feel more than welcome, you?ll feel part of something special. Here we make room for big dreams and quiet courtesy with an equal measure of warmth.
